Community Garden Harvest

On Valentine’s Day, with the leadership of Mr. Ken Valburg, Mrs. Makiko Shibata-Ellis, and Mr. Kevin Kwan, our 4th to 6th grade Student Service Organization (SSO) students harvested our community garden.  Our organic produce which included romaine and iceberg lettuce, bok choy, spinach, peas, carrots, radish, and beets were donated to the Homeless Intervention and Shelter House (H.I.S. House) which is located in Placentia.

H.I.S. House is a transitional shelter to homeless individuals while they find employment and gain financial independence.  According to its director, Ms. Teri Niebuhr, most of the residents at the shelter are domestic violence victims.  She said, “We get food donations from around the community, but these vegetables are probably the healthiest of them all.”  Our students agreed as they sampled the tasty peas and carrots.

For spring, Mr. Kevin Kwan is planning to plant tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplants, watermelon, pumpkins, and lemons.  Maybe in the future, we can even have a lemonade stand with our harvest!  Stay tuned and volunteer to help in planting and harvesting.
